C-mount and sensors

Traditionally associated with 16mm movie (then video) cameras,
C-mount (and too similar CS-mount) are often used for microscope camera adapters
and industrial USB/HDMI digital camera bodies,
for which one common brand is Hayear.

C-mount cameras with nominal 1-inch sensors are liable to vignetting:
  • CS-mount FFD:  12.526mm
  • metric thread spec for both:  25.4x0.75
  • many different sensor sizes:

DSLR, mirrorless camera flange to sensor distance

many different sensors, typically Sony or Panasonic

  • many are just 2k (2048x1080) or 4K (4096x2160) security webcam sensors

    CMOS Image Sensor Format Type Size

    Consider the application for which many small images sensors are designed and sold:  security
    • relatively large fields of view, with rays converging towards sensors
    • pixels near (rectangular) sensor corners are liable to vignetting, because fewer rays captured
    • Consequently, 16mm (instead of 25.4) diagonal is considered 1-inch
    • recall that an original application for (1-inch) C-mount was 16mm (diagonal) film
    • In Sony sensor-speak, 16mm is Type 1/1.2 format
    • Microscope objective fields > 18mm may benefit from e.g. a 0.7-0.75X photo relay lens,
      but direct projection from fully corrected objectives to Type 1/1.2 format sensor
      probably yields better image quality that imperfect relay optics.
    • 4/3 IMX294CJK sensor may make ZWO ASI294MC the best current dual-purpose camera
