Nikon Optiphot 2 instructions

Compared to first gen, Optiphot 2 differs by style, CFN optics and 100W illuminator.
Acquired for (infinity) Optiphot 150 vertical illuminator and CF Plan objectives,
then Optiphot 100 DIC was obtained..
Used for objective comparisons.

Condenser focus pinion gear was split.

musical condenser focus gears

While Labophot and Optiphot condenser focus block design are similar,
they are not interchangeable. However, focus pinion gear assemblies are.
Replacement assemblies with metal pinion gears are available:

... but plenty of cannnibalized frames have intact condenser focus gear assemblies.
The fine focus bushing is retained by two 1.5mm hex socket set screws.

infinity head dovetails

AO/Reichert infinity microscope dovetail fits Nikon infinity:

Red arrow points to AO Phase Star Aperture Viewing Unit #1245.

condenser centering

Approx 0.5mm-thick cardboard shims between condenser bracket and dovetail
cured inability to center illumination field aperture by condenser thumbscrews;

1 thickness on left
3 thicknesses on right

Condenser bracket-to-dovetail screw holes (4) are oversize to adjust stage parallelism.

100W halogen lamp

Halogen cycle lamps operate best with 10% or so of designed voltage.
100W lamp helps make Optiphot 2 good for photography,
but uncomfortably bright for viewing with 20x or lower power objectives.
A variable ND filter can comfortably reduce illumination intensity.
67mm lens filters rest well on the field lens; 72mm variable ND was on sale.
